Psoriasis is an autoimmune illness that results in excess skin cell growth that manifests most commonly as red, dry, scaly patches. Although the cause is not clearly known, the interaction between certain genes and the immune system are thought to be related to its development. Psoriasis usually flares up in a small percentage of people as a result of triggers, which could include stress, medication, skin infections or trauma.

Types of Psoriasis

1. Plaque – The most common type, plaque psoriasis causes raised, red, dry patches of dead skin, which typically appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.
2. Guttate – The second most common type, guttate psoriasis causes small, red dots. This type is commonly seen in young children and adolescents.
3. Pustular – In this form, white noninfectious blisters filled with white blood cells form typically on the hands and feet.
4. Inverse – This type results in smooth, shiny red lesions in folds of skin, such as under the arm, behind the knee, and groin area.
5. Erythrodermic – The most severe and most uncommon is erythrodermic psoriasis, in which a painful and itchy widespread rash develops. Although only seen in 3% of psoriasis patients, it can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.

Treatments depend on the severity of your psoriasis and can range from moisturizers, over-the-counter medications and shampoos, to a combination of topical treatments, light therapy and systemic medications. Treatments may lead to completely clear skin in mild conditions and can improve a person’s quality of life.
